Development of sensor fabrication to foster cognitive processes in STEM-based multi-
sensory education system.

Title of your project

Development of sensor fabrication to foster cognitive processes in STEM-based multi-sensory education system.

Problem statement.

The integration of laboratory-based activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has been identified as a key factor in promoting students’ engagement and understanding of the subject matter. However, many schools and educational institutions lack the necessary infrastructure to provide students with adequate hands-on laboratory experiences. This results in a significant gap between the research and the school curriculum, hindering students’ ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. Additionally, traditional laboratory activities require sophisticated and expensive equipment, which may not be accessible to all students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The proposed research aims to address this problem by developing and evaluating novel educational tools that can bridge the gap between research and school curriculum, without the need for extensive laboratory infrastructure. The proposed educational tools will utilize everyday household items, pencil and paper, and Arduino boards to provide students with hands-on laboratory experiences for science education and educational tools for human-computer interaction.

In summary, the proposed research aims to develop and evaluate novel educational tools that can bridge the gap between research and school curriculum, without the need for extensive laboratory infrastructure and align to cognitive psychology, discovery learning, and experiment-based learning to promote students’ engagement and understanding of the subject matter.

Project brief.

This project aims to develop novel sensor fabrication techniques using economical solutions such as pencils and paper for multi-sensory educational innovations. The project also aims to integrate the developed technology with IoT, AR, and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in STEM education through the creation of educational tools, DIY kits, and teaching-learning aids and toys. The ultimate goal is to make the research work ready to be absorbed in the social and commercial settings of the education sector, with the specific benefit of remote schools in Himachal Pradesh through the incubation at Phase I Exploration Program (Batch 2022) at IIT Mandi Catalyst. The project will utilize novel proximity, touch, sound, heat, and humidity sensors, as well as innovative products such as a STEM Lab book and smart circuit-making pen, to create a universal portable STEM lab and enhance experimental learning through IoT and HMI integration.

Current status

The research outcomes to date include the publication of one paper in Elsevier’s e-Prime – Advances in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Energy, and the filing of two patents: one for a Smart STEM Lab Book (Patent Number-202211032711, Indian Patent Office) and another for a novel technique to create Calligraphic Proximity and Touch Capacitive Sensor using Pencil to functionalize surfaces for smart walls, smart papers, and smart multi-sensory educational applications.
